Club cycling has entered a period of non-competitive riding, focusing on club runs and other training in preparation for the next year’s events.

Last week may have been the last of the really warm weather and it held for Sunday morning, when the VC Baracchi club run was to Dunwich via Halesworth, Peasenhall, Saxmundham and Leiston, returning across country through Wenhaston and Uggeshall.

There were seven club riders on this ride, two of them on a tandem, and the average speed worked out at just over 18mph for the 60 miles.

A separate group of three set off the same way and went via Laxfield, overstaying long enough in a Bungay café to be caught in the rain during the last four miles or so, becoming quite wet in the process.

John Thompson rode out to see the Gt Yarmouth CC hill climb at Bramerton and join their social gathering at the pub afterwards.

The fastest time of the day was by Morris Bacon riding for Iceni Velo (55.65 seconds), second was Rob Harlow of GYCC (58.04 seconds) and third was Lee Cheung of GYCC (63.51 seconds). They had a total of 21 riders, eighteen of whom were from GYCC.

Norman Harlow of GYCC thought that was likely to be a record attendance for the event.

Also taking an important place in the local cycling scene were the usual two weekday rides by the Wrinklies, some of whom are VCB members.

The rides are at 9am on Tuesdays and Fridays from Carlton Colville church and usually work out at about 45 miles, always with a café stop.

Last week’s sunny weather was exceptional for these rides and the Friday one was to Walberswick for a “banana stop” by the river before returning via “Posh Pigs” at Ellough.

This Monday, November 10 (not the November 11 as was accidentally stated last week) the club’s annual general meeting at the Tramway Hotel will provide an opportunity to make a final decision on the kit supplier for the club’s new kit, the pattern of which will be different next year.

On Saturday November 15 club members can celebrate at the annual prize presentation evening at the Carlton PH this year’s exceptional performances.
