Dupen and Womack enjoy success

John Dupen and Chris Womack of Velo Club Baracchi had superb rides in the Shaftesbury CC Middlemarkers open 25-mile time trial on the dual carriageways between Newmarket and Four Went Ways.

Dupen can now be called a 57-minute man, having achieved the superb result of 57:55, while Womack dipped under the hour with 59:58.

Andrew Horner of Veloschils Interbike RT won in 55:11 from Matt Anderson of Glendene CC in 55:43.  The fastest lady was Verity Smith of Stowmarket & District CC in 1-03:08.

It was warm and the wind was moderate; a head to side wind going out, making the return leg slightly faster.

Dupen was also the fastest VCB rider in the Godric Club 10 last week with 22:41, just holding off club-mate Paul Dennington who achieved 22:44.  Dennington was disappointed that Dupen had edged it by three seconds.

John Swanbury was pleased with a season’s-best 24:21 and Mark Womack was happy with a personal best 25:28.

The slightly unsettled day brightened up for the event and the conditions seemed good, with little wind.  Attendance was a little down, at 22 riders, but perhaps some of the regulars had not expected such a good dry night.

The winner was Stuart Pryce of Strada Sport in 21:38, with Simon Scott  of Anglia Velo and Robert Gooch of Rock Estate second equal in 22:21, Dupen fourth and Dennington fifth.  The fastest Godric was Joe McDonald with 23:44.

John Thompson was just about content with his 1-16:18 result in the CC Breckland 25-mile time trial last Wednesday

It was on what Thompson described as a ‘humpy farmyard’ circuit of two laps starting near Scoulton on the B1108 through Rockland, Ellingham and Hingham back past the finish and start for the 2nd lap.  The rain held off but there was some wind.

The winner was Jack Sears of Stowmarket & District CC in 56:40.  There were 23 riders, just five more of whom were under the hour, Stephen Gorbutt of Diss, Scott Davidson of Team VeloVelocity, Jason Turner of Norwich ABC, Angus Jardine of Ipswich BC and Geoff Frost of Team VeloVelocity in that order.

Paul Dennington of VCB took second place in the Gt Yarmouth CC 10-mile club time trial at Somerleyton with a great ride of 23:38, beaten by only ten seconds by Mark Westrup of Strada Sport.

Mark Womack, in ninth place with 25:51 and Ali Banks in his first event of the season, with 26:55, made up the VCB trio.  Jenny Anderson of Gt Yarmouth CC was the only lady and she achieved 27:21.  Twenty-seven rode.

The club 30-mile championship had to be postponed.  A well-attended club run went to Dunwich via Halesworth, Walpole, Peasenhall and Saxmundham.

On a recent "Wrinklies" ride, Chris Womack and John Dupen gently stretch their legs
