Dupen is the man on form

Last week’s Godric CC Tuesday evening club 10-mile time trial featured a good ride by Velo Club Baracchi’s John Dupen, with 22:57 for sixth place out of the 32 solo riders.

Other Baracchi times were Titch Richards 24:35, George Kerridge 24:46, Mark Womack 25:57 and John Thompson 27:57.

John Swanbury recruited Paul Dennington to ride as stoker on his tandem for the first time and together they set a time of 22:42.  Denningron commented on how hard the ride had been.

Other times, by former VCB riders riding for other clubs were Liam Gentry (Strada Sport) 23:14, James Moore (Strada Sport) 23:18, Mark Newnham (Anglia Velo) 24:23 and Simon Scott (Anglia Velo) 24:49.  Nicki Hawkes of VCB, riding for Velo Velocity, achieved a course-best 25:35.

The top five times were: Jim Burgess (Anglia Velo) 21:15, Stuart Pryce (Strada Sport) 21:45, L Calderon (Iceni Velo) 22:27, S Taylor (RAF CC) 22:32, M Smith (Norwich CA) 22:37.

Dennington went on to take second place in the Gt Yarmouth CC club 10, with 24:09, beaten only by Andy Tyler of CC Breckland (23:35).

Other VCB times were Richards 24:33 for fourth place, Steve Summons 25:30 and Mark Womack 26:43.  In third place was one-time VCB member Mark Westrup of Strada Sport with 24:11. Twenty-four rode.

The climax of the week was supposed to be the North Norfolk Wheelers 100-mile time trial on Sunday but in the heat none of the three VCB riders finished.

John Thonpson and Chris Womack both completed two of the three laps and John Dupen rode one of them.

Each lap was from Fakenham on the A148 to Hillington on the B1145 and back on the A1065 to Fakenham.

Womack said “I was going OK, averaging 22.2mph so I would have been around the 4 hours 40 mark.  My legs where alright but the body gave up due to the heat.”

The winning time of Mark Arnold (CC Desiragear) was 3-52:18.  Second was Daniel Bloy (Team VeloVelocity.co.uk (3-55:31), with Burgess of Anglia Velo third in 4-03:43.

Liz King of Tri-Anglia Triathlon Club was the fastest lady with 4-31:09.

John Thompson’s time in the weather-hit Lea Valley 10 the previous week was not quite as disappointing as was accidentally reported.  The real result was 31:31 and we are glad to correct it.
