Hayward rides excellent 25-mile time

Paul Hayward of Velo Club Baracchi had a strong ride in the VC Norwich open 25 on the A11 from East Harling, recording 55:15.

Local rider and VCB second-claim member Mark Richards riding for DAP CC secured third place with 49:53, behind Jonathan Wears of CES Sport (47:43) and Ben Stancombe of Team VeloVelocity (48:54).

Claire Emons of Newbury RC took the ladies’ win with 55:51 but Wrentham rider Denise Hurren of Team VeloVelocity could be pleased with 57:31 and the two Gt Yarmouth CC riders Jan Smith, with 1-00:07 (a PB) and Jenny Anderson with 1-02:21 also did well.

Stuart Supple of VCB pulled out when he found his back brake was binding heavily and he could not free it by the roadside. John Swanbury punctured on a pothole and similarly did not finish. It was disappointing for both, as the weather conditions were good.

Gt Yarmouth CC’s 25-mile club time trial on Sunday around the Gt Yarmouth sporting course attracted five VCB members, though one, Lucas He, rides first claim for Cambridge University CC and he was back at full speed after a sports injury with 56:34.

The VCB times were Alex He 1-08:25, Patrick Harbord 1-08:36 (achieved on a road bike), Swanbury 1-09:09 and Paul Reed 1-11:06.

This was Harbord’s first 25 for many years. The handicap results (to be announced) count towards the inter-club Holmes Cup so he could be one of the counters for VCB.

GYCC’s fastest rider was Jonny Hawes with 1-01:27 from Julian Claxton 1-02:24. The Gt Yarmouth ladies’ times were Jan Smith 1-10:03 and Jenny Anderson 1-11:49. Thirteen rode.

Nick Partridge of VCB was fastest overall in Godric CC’s club 10 last week with 20:22, which equalled his course-best time despite the strong wind.

Other VCB times were Paul Dennington and Hayward tied on 22:34 in third place overall, Supple 23:52 and Swanbury 26:10.

Second overall was the recent winner of VCB’s road race, Zach Herrod, riding for Aerolab Ward WheelZ, in 20:55, with Ian Nixon of Cake Gang fifth in 22:35. Nineteen rode.
