VC Baracchi riders to tackle CC Breckland New Year 10

Velo Club Baracchi riders will make up nearly a fifth of the field in the New Year’s Day CC Breckland open time trial.

The 10-mile event on the A11 is totally out of season as a holiday special. The weather at this time of year is not really conducive to fast times, but every year some surprisingly good times are recorded.

They may indicate what kind of season the rider may go on to enjoy.

Last New Year, for example, Paul Dennington went under the 24-minute mark for the first time ever and he went on to achieve 20:52 later in the year. He is highly motivated for this forthcoming event.

This year the ranks are swelled by the return of Liam Gentry to the VC Baracchi fold after several years with Strada Sport and he is entered in the event.

Gentry is the holder of the current VCB 10-mile record, 20:35, so it remains to be seen whether Dennington can beat him on the day.

Also vying for the best VCB time at the CC Breckland event will be John Dupen, who achieved 21:18 and Titch Richards, who ran him close with 21:29.

Chris Womack, whose best this year was 22:13 and John Swanbury, who achieved 24:00, make the VCB numbers up to six, with Womack likely to do well in the veteran category.

There is a team prize up for grabs and the three fastest VCB riders in the event have a chance in this category as well.

Mark Arnold of CC Desiragear is the top seed in the event, with Paul Jay of Team VeloVelocity and Gentry himself also possible winners.

In the meantime most of the VCB riders are out and about getting in some training. Dennington, Dupen and Womack were in apparent good form on the club run.

A Happy New Year from us all!
