Hayward rides well in VTTA 10

Paul Hayward of VC Baracchi rode in the VTTA 10-mile time trial from Wortwell and achieved 22:45.

Fastest was David Crisp of 3T-Racing in 21:14, though on veteran age criteria the top award went to Jackie Field of CC Ashwell whose 22:57 was six-and-a-half minutes faster than her age standard.

The event seemed doomed when three sets of roadworks with traffic lights appeared on the A143 near Bungay but a delay in the start time allowed it to go ahead when work finished.

Paul Dennington of VCB had a great ride and took 25 seconds off his club record with 33:06 for fourteenth place in the CC Breckland (District Championships) 15-mile time trial on the A11 last Wednesday.

Ben Stancombe of Team VeloVelocity won the championship in 28:47 (31.29mph) with Matthew Senter of Peterborough CC second in 29:28.

The fastest lady was Joy Payne from (out-of-district) Amersham Road Club of Great Missenden in 35:21. Jan Smith of Gt Yarmouth CC took local honours in 35:47 in her first “15” and her club-mate Jenny Anderson (a VCB second-claim member) rode a personal best 36:42.

VCB’s John Swanbury achieved 37:39.

In Godric CC’s 10-mile club time trial last week VCB’s Nick Partridge took second place with 20:38 behind triathlete Joe Skipper of Team Skipper, who with 19:45 failed by only four seconds to beat Mark Richards’ course record.

Other VCB times were Mark Saunders 22:33, Paul Dennington 23:04, Stuart Supple 23:26, John Swanbury 25:36, Mark Womack 26:24 and Jodie Lee 32:06.

Paul Dennington was the second-fastest rider in the Gt Yarmouth CC club 10 last week, with 23:45.

Dennington said, “It was just the finish that was a bit of a challenge as there was a large tractor with a bucket loader halfway across the road.”

Richard Allen managed to finish on the same number of seconds as Dennington but needed exactly six minutes more.

Fastest was Louis Julian of DAP CC in 22:55 and the fastest from the home club was Simon Tate in 25:03.

Paul Wright of VCB, who finished in the top 25% of his age group in the Tour of Cambridgeshire Gran Fondo in early June has obtained entry into the UCI Gran Fondo World Championships in Poznan, Poland and is looking forward to riding on 1st September.
