Thompson the audax enthusiast

The only Velo Club Baracchi known to have ridden a formal event at the weekend was John Thompson, who took part in “The Stansted Airport Express” 101 km Audax on Saturday.

From its base at the Witham Wetherspoons the route took him to Great Leighs at 12km, Matching Green at 37km, Thremhall Park at 52km (next to airport runway, hence event name), Thaxted at 69km and back to Witham.

He said, “I finished in a little over 6 hours.  Next year, being more familiar with the route, hopefully I will slip under.  It was a wet ride, with steady rain most of the time, but the wind was not particularly troublesome.”

Thompson also had a local ride on Sunday, getting in about 50 miles and it featured Sunday roast and dessert of apple and caramel crumble bake with custard at Wrentham on the return run after a good tailwind from the Laxfield area.

Other VCB members and two former members were out on the club run and they managed to include a café stop as well, which at this time of the year is one of the enjoyable features of cycling.

Alex and Lucas He were in the group and Lucas, who has just returned from a term at Cambridge, is enjoying local cycling again in the university vacation.
